Environment protection

Since 17th February, 2005 Environmental Management System certified by Swedish National Testing and Research Institute SP and meeting requirements of LST ISO 14001 standard and concerning all departments and subdivisions of the company has been implemented.

In December, 2006 integrated pollution prevention and control permit was certified for pollution emission of Akmenės cementas AB. Requirements were prepared after evaluation of Best Available Techniques (BAT) in most progressive cement production companies. The permit has been renewed on 18th of July 2018.

To achieve aims and goals in a sphere of environmental improvement, programmes on environmental actions, measures and funds, terms and responsibilities for their implementation were prepared. Programmes are revised if new aims and goals are determined. Improvement plans are directly related to programme of management system for reduction of pollution, rational usage of resources.

Used tyres as alternative fuel is widespread in cement industry all over the world: USA, Japan, Europe, Australia.

USA has approximately 6 million tons of used tyres a year, 53% of them are used for fuel.

Akmenės cementas AB started burning of used tyres on 23rd of May, 2006. The method patented in USA was chosen as the most suitable for long wet process rotary kilns.

Whole tyres are passed to kiln over transporter system through special feeding pipeline located in a mid of kiln. Temperature is up to 1200°C at the waste feeding point. For burning of non hazardous waste temperature up to 900 °C is enough. An advantage of cement production kilns is that no extra waste products remain while burning waste. All ash which forms during burning process compound into a product, clinker, composition, are stabilised and has no effect on product quality.

Currently about 10 % of fuel being used in the company is used tyres.

AB „Akmenės cementas” used waste tyres for thermal energy:

7197,28 t 8089,36 t 9083,88 t  6856,00 t  7272,00 t  8574,44 t  1530,84 t  3832,94 t  4466,45 t
2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2017 2018 2019

12 000 tonnes of non renewable fuel (coal) a year is being saved. More over, burning tyres emit less of CO2 to atmosphere than coal. Emission factor of coal is about 95 t CO2/ TJ, and emission factor of used tyres is 85 t CO2/ TJ.

Akmenės cementas AB issues certificates for companies regarding acceptance of unusable tyres and certificates approved by Ministry of Environment regarding recovery of taxable products or packaging waste. Based on these certificates economic subjects are exempted from packaging/product fee

According to the Good Working Practice, amount of waste (hazardous and non-hazardous) being burned in analogical clinker burning rotary kilns increasingly grows, because such equipment, the same as single-purpose waste burning equipment, meets the requirements for waste burning equipment most.

It is planned to burn separated municipal waste, differently named as solid recovered fuel, after dry production process will be implemented.

In July 2006 the Swiss company „PEG.S.A.” completed feasibility study on transforming Akmenės cementas AB production from wet production process to modern dry process, which would correspond BAT (Best Available Techniques) of production.

Currently modernisation of production in the company is started – wet cement production process is being transformed to dry process. Such conversion will enable reduction of fuel consumption per unit of production by half and will reduce amount of COemitted to environment by quarter.

Wet production process 1,2 t CO/1 t of clinker, dry production process 0,85 t CO/1 t of clinker.

Total amount of this the biggest investment project throughout the history of the plant is approximately 290 million Litas. Modernisation of the production is intended to be completed by the end of 2013.

Monitoring of atmosphere pollution sources is carried out under schedule for control of atmospheric pollution sources coordinated by state analytic control division of Šiauliai Regional Environmental Department.

Analysis on NOx, SO2, CO, heavy metals, HCl, HF, BOA, dioxins and furans in a gas emitted are carried out under the contract by external laboratory. Analysis of dioxins and furans are carried out in the Republic of Slovakia.

Allowable limit value of dioxins and furans is 0,1 ng/Nm3, actual emissions significantly lower.
